Angel AU: The Star

17. The Star - a character gets their wish; a character gives another hope; a character leads another through the darkness

“How did you find us?” The Nephilim asks as Peter wraps his hands around a mug of tea as he draws his knees up to tuck them against his chest.

“Divine Inspiration,” he explains, eyes looking between the three people gathered on the other side of the kitchen table.

There’s Tony who still seems amazed that Peter found his way to this isolated cabin in the wilderness of upstate New York. They’re closer to the Canadian border than the nearest town. The Nephilim, Bruce, who seems ready to split apart from the power of the angel bound inside him is concerned that they were found at all.

And Rhodey, an agent of the underground and military officer, seems deeply contradictory to Peter but he doesn’t know much about the world outside the angel trade. He’s only just started to explore it since Tony freed him.

“That’s a rare gift?” Rhodey asks as he looks between the angels in the room.

“Shows a certain favoritism from Dad,” Tony explains. His right wing still hangs useless from his shoulder. It has been bound to try and make it easier to move around but the weight of it means Tony leans slightly in his seat. “When given to angels, at least. Humans are supposed to experience it all the time. It’s the most common way He communicates to you guys.”

“I felt a pull and followed it here,” Peter explains.

“So, there’s no trail of clues leading you here?” Bruce asks, folding his arms over his chest.

Peter shakes his head. “Not one that any human could follow.”

The three men breathe a collective sigh of relief. Peter understands. While he has been following that sense of rightness in his chest here he’s listened and watched the human media. The hunt for Tony is extensive. According to the news Thanos has invested thousands in the best hunters to try and find Tony and bring him back.

It’s excessive and stupid but very human. Thanos’ prize slipped through his fingers. He wants it back. Peter’s seen it time and time again. He’s experienced it with Master Osborn who was not happy when the auction house revoked his contract on Peter.

Thanos won’t stop until Tony is his or dead.

He sips his tea as a chill goes down his spine. “You can’t stay here.”

“I know that, kid.” Tony adjusts his posture but he’s soon slumping again. “But I can’t go out there and fight until my wing is fixed and the number of people who can fix it is extremely low.”

“If you give us more time…” Bruce says, his voice taking on an echoing quality as the sense of Grace grows stronger from him. The angel within wants to speak as well. Peter’s fascinated by the Nephilim. A being that shouldn’t exist but is standing right there.

“You were never that kind of doctor,” Rhodey interjects. “And the longer we wait the more pressure Thanos puts out. The underground is on high alert. We can barely move angels to their next stop because there are so many people on alert and hunters out there.”

“There’s the Doctor.”

“Who?” Tony asks.

“He’s a doctor who’s found a way to treat angelic injuries. I’ve never worked with him directly but the underground does work with him.” Rhodey shakes his head. “The problem is he’s in New York. Somewhere in Manhattan, I think, and that’s the heart of Thanos’ power. We can’t move Tony there. It’s too much of a risk.”

That is true. The city’s angel trade is on full alert. Peter hasn’t heard from Steve since he left to follow his Inspiration but it’s talked about a lot on the news. Everyone from big name angel dealers like Thanos and Fisk to small time pawn angel dealers are waiting for something to happen.

He imagines Steve is having a hard time trying to keep the underground together and well hidden. It’ll be better, easier, when Peter brings Tony back. He feels very certain of this and rarely is his certainty wrong.

“But he’s the only one who can heal Tony’s wing,” Peter says. “He’s who we need. I can get Tony there.”

“How?” Rhodey asks, his look intense.

Peter smiles a little. “Divine Inspiration.”

Tony laughs and reaches across the table to pat Peter’s shoulder. “I knew you were a good kid.”

Peter’s wings lift at the praise.

“I still think it’s too dangerous.”

“Have a little faith, Rhodes.” Tony doesn’t look away from Peter. “We’ve been delivered a Messenger. If that’s not a sigh from Dad, I don’t know what is.”
